Nancy Lingemann Remembers Alan Chadwick, Part 3
The third part of Nancy's interview with Greg Haynes in March, 2014. Nancy Lingemann further describes how Chadwick treated women in the garden at Santa Cruz. She also gives additional examples of his generosity toward her. After Alan was dismissed as director of the newly established farm project, a visit was planned by Robert Rodale, the publisher of "Organic Gardening Magazine" and the poet/novelist/essayist Wendell Berry, two men who, along with Alan, played an important role in re-establishing a respect for the value of organic gardening in the United States. These men made the error of dropping in on Alan only after they had paid a visit to the upstart who had wrested Alan's job from him as the farm director. Alan felt that this demonstrated a lack of respect, and so declined to meet with them. Nancy attended the event up at the garden chalet and expresses her sadness that Alan couldn't participate. His umbrage was certainly justified, but it is also probable that Rodale and Berry were entirely unaware of the dirty politics that had resulted in the recent split. The fault was not theirs. (9:33)
